SQL Jumpstart Series
Introduction
We've put together a series of four great seminars that we'll be conducting in
Altamonte Springs (just north of Orlando, FL) on Sep 30 - Oct 3, 2008:
- Sep 30 - DBA 101 with Andy Warren
- Oct 1 - BI 101 with Brian Knight
- Oct 2 - Peformance Tuning with Andy Warren
- Oct 3 - SQL 2008 New Features with Brian Knight
So why a series of seminars rather than one big event?
- We wanted to provide ala carte pricing. You decide which days fit your needs and you decide how much to spend
- Most conferences are full of marketing fluff, time that be could be better spent learning - no time wasting keynotes at our event!
- Conferences are hard to sell to managers, they would rather use their budget for 'real' training and while this isn't traditional classroom learning, we think you'll learn a lot in this format compared to the one hour sessions you would do at conference
Registration & Hours
Each seminar will begin promptly at 9 am, we'll break for lunch onsite about
noon, and the seminar will conclude at 4 pm.Coffee will be served in the
morning, and lunch is also provided as part of the registration fee. We
encourage all attendees to join us in the hotel altrium afterward for more
discussion and networking from 4-6 pm.
Pricing
Each seminar is $150, with a 10% discount available if you book four or more
seats to the event. We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express as well as
corporate purchase orders. Payments are due prior to admission. Registration is
fully refundable if you cancel more than 7 days prior to the event, after that
due to limited seating registrations will be non-refundable.
If you book multiple days it can be the same person on each day, or you can send
a different person each day - a great way to get everyone some training and to
let them pick which topics interest them the most.
Hotel
We're presenting all four seminars at the Embassy Suites in Altamonte Springs, a
first class facility. For those traveling/staying overnight, the hotel offers a
cooked to order breakfast, free managers happy hour each night, heated pool, and
it's located on a lake with a great boardwalk - perfect for unwinding after a
day of learning. Our group rate is $119/night, please use this link to register.
Agenda
Day 1 - DBA 101 by Andy Warren
This is a one day seminar that focuses on the core skills that you need to
survive as a beginning DBA, or as the developer/network admin/business owner
that needs to do the mininum tasks required to keep a SQL Server operational and
healthy. We'll cover install and initial configuration, logins and security,
backup and restore, maintenance plans, and review the options for high
availability. Expect lots of Q&A during this seminar.

Day 2 - BI 101 by Brian Knight
We're going to introduce you to the key concepts in SSIS, Analysis Services, and
Reporting Services. Bring a laptop and follow along as we build a package to
import data, build a working analysis services cube, and then do some basis
reporting using Reporting Services. As a bonus you'll also learn how to apply
basic data mining to your data. At the end of the day you will have a clear view
of how these important pieces work together and how you would begin the process
of taking advantage of the hidden intelligence waiting in your data back at the
office.

Day 3 - Performance Tuning by Andy Warren
Performance tuning is a key skill for DBA (or developer who doesn't have a DBA),
but performance tuning has always been the hardest of the SQL skills to learn
because there are so many pieces to the puzzle. We're going to focus on the
things you need to know to solve 80% of your performance problems; using
Profiler, how, why, and when to apply the different types of indexes, how to
read query plans and formulate ideas for improving performance, and a set of
tasks to work on when you return to work to help boost performance.

Day 4 - SQL 2008 New Features by Brian Knight
SQL 2008 is finally due to be released this fall and it contains a wealth of
improvements and new features. We're going to walk through as many of those
changes as we can in one day, showing you how they work, when and if you should
apply them, and how they affect you as you start planning your upgrade from SQL
2000 or SQL 2005.
